Poliahu and Pele - Backdrop for Hula Performance in Japan

On May 25th, Kumu Hula Keala Ching had his first concert in Tokyo. He has been my Kumu for 7 years, sharing his knowledge of Hula me and my Hula sisters. I deeply respect him and am happy to support his teachings and work in the preservation of Hawaiian culture.

The concert was to commemorate the release of Ms. Rolinda Bean’s debut CD. Ms. Rolinda Bean is from Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. Rolinda and Kumu Keala have dedicated their time to preserving and passing down traditional Hawaiian Hula and Hawaiian culture.

This concert was one-of-a-kind event. The audience enjoyed beautiful Hawaiian songs and traditional Hawaiian Hula that truly evoked the spirit of Hawaiian gods and nature throughout the room.

I was asked to bring my thangkas of Pele and Poliahu to adorn the stage. It was an honor for our halau to preform in Japan as our halau has many Japanese members. It was a proud moment for me to see my thangkas brought to life through the brilliant choreography and dance performance.

５月２５日、ハワイ島のクム・フラ・ケアラ・チン氏が東京で初めてのコンサートを行いました。私はクム・ケアラからフラを学んで７年になります。フラとは本当は何であるかをクムから教わりました。尊敬するクムのもとで、たくさんのことをシェアできるフラ・シスターたちにも恵まれています。

これはロリンダ・ビーンさんのCDデビューを記念したコンサートでした。ロリンダさんはハワイ島のコナ出身です。ロリンダさんとクム・ケアラはハワイ文化を守り広めるために、長い間一緒に一生懸命活動しています。

このコンサートは、美しいハワイアン・ミュージックと神々や自然とのつながりを感じることのできる本当のフラを心ゆくまで楽しむことのできる特別なものでした。このように踊りやチャントを通してフラは古代から行われてきたのです。

私はペレとポリアフのタンカを持ってきて欲しいと依頼され、私もハラウの一員としてステージで踊りました。素晴しいフラを通して私のタンカが生き生きと輝くのを誇りに思い、またとてもありがたく思いました。
